How to Help Your Child’s Classroom (Even When You Are Short on Time)

October 24, 2026

Most parents would love to help their child’s classroom. The hard part is knowing what actually helps, and fitting it into a busy week. The good news: some of the most useful things take minutes, and many cost little or nothing.

Ask the teacher what would help

Teachers are asked “what can I do?” all the time, and a clear answer is a gift to them. A short email works: “I’d love to help the class this year. Is there anything you need, big or small?” Some teachers will point you to a class wish list. Others will mention a specific job.

Give to the class wish list

If your child’s teacher or room parent shared a class list, it is the quickest way to help. You can see exactly what is still needed and pick what fits your budget:

  • Buy an item from its store link and have it sent to the school.
  • Chip in any amount toward a bigger item, like a book set or a field trip.

Five dollars toward a reader set counts. On Our Class List you do not need an account, and your name is shared only with the teacher.

Help without spending money

  • Donate what you already have. Gently used books, art supplies, or empty containers for projects. Ask first, so the teacher is not buried in things they cannot use.
  • Offer a skill. Can you read aloud, talk about your job on career day, or help with a class website?
  • Do prep work at home. Many teachers have cutting, sorting or laminating jobs that can be done at the kitchen table.
  • Chaperone. Field trips often depend on enough adults signing up.

Support the room parent

If your class has a room parent, they are probably juggling a lot. Answering their messages, signing up for one task, or offering to help with the class list makes a big difference. If your class does not have one, you could be it: here is how room parents use a class list.

Say thank you

The easiest help of all is a note. Tell the teacher about something your child came home excited about. Teachers rarely hear what lands, and it keeps them going.
